Manufacturing

A developing and independent resource for all interested in the leather industry.

This section is a resource for readers interested in our industry. It is based around my revision Notes from Leeds University in the 1960's, embellished here and there with new ideas and developments. It will contain some errors. I was not a good student. Nevertheless as you travel the leather industry and see modern tanneries working in parts of the world alongside craft/lifestyle units you will find it useful to have some of the older techniques to refer back to.

During those years at The Procter Department at Leeds University - 1966 to 1970 - my tutor was P.Stanley Briggs. He was the one quiet minds who understood my thinking and my aspirations, imparting what practical knowledge he could from a vast wealth of experience. I owe him a great debt, and these pages are my dedication to his lifelong commitment to our industry.

Additionally I used a number of standard texts, which are identified at the end. Being so long ago it is now hard to identify the precise origin of each section and if some come directly from the text books rather than from Mr. Briggs notes I hope no one will object.

The sections are identified on the left of this screen.

I hope you find this enjoyable and useful.
